Canada’s ministers of education recognize that literacy is the foundation of learning and an essential component of the knowledge-and skills-based economy of the 21st century.
More and more evidence suggests that literacy in all its forms ― from reading a newspaper to filling out a job application, from being able to access and evaluate information on the Internet to understanding the basics of personal finances ― plays a key role in the development of the individual, the well-being of the community, and the success of our economy.
Provinces and territories are working individually, according the needs of their populations, and collectively, through CMEC, to ensure that literacy is at the heart of learning in Canada and that all Canadians have the opportunity to develop their literacy skills.
