Provinces and territories address literacy at the pan-Canadian level through CMEC, their long-standing intergovernmental body. Work at CMEC focuses primarily on:
- collecting and analyzing data on literacy
- promoting the importance of literacy
- working internationally on literacy-related issues
- convening Canadians to promote knowledge-sharing on literacy
This work contributes to the fulfillment of ministers' commitment to literacy and complements the many literacy activities being undertaken in each province and territory.
To ensure linkages among literacy activities at both provincial/territorial and pan-Canadian levels, CMEC maintains a Literacy Expert Advisory Group (LEAG) which meets on a regular basis and provides periodic updates to ministers of education on literacy-related issues in Canada.
