Economic Downturn and Educational Attainment

This fact sheet sheds light on the relationship between education and labour market outcomes by providing a brief overview of the impact of economic changes on the employment of individuals with different levels of educational attainment to identify which groups have been most affected by the economic downturn and which have benefitted most from the recovery. The 2008-through-2011 data for Canada and its provinces and territories are from Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey.

Second Report from the 2009 Programme for International Student Assessment

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a collaborative effort among member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). PISA is designed to provide policy-oriented international indicators of the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students and sheds light on a range of factors that contribute to successful students, schools and education systems. The Second Report from the 2009 PISA complements the first one by looking at the contextual variables associated with reading achievement. It provides information concerning the student- and school-related factors, and an examination of linkages between the student engagement in reading, attitudes, approaches to learning, and reading achievement.

Measuring up: Canadian Results of the OECD PISA Study

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a collaborative effort among member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). PISA is designed to provide policy-oriented international indicators of the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students and sheds light on a range of factors that contribute to successful students, schools and education systems. The 2009 report provides the initial results from the PISA 2009 assessment for Canada and the provinces in reading, mathematics, and science. Results are compared to other participating countries and across Canadian provinces. A second pan-Canadian report, with more detailed analyses of factors associated with student performance, will be published in early 2011.

Interrupting High School and Returning to Education

The Pan-Canadian Education Indicators Program (PCEIP) is an ongoing initiative of the Canadian Education Statistics Council (CESC), a partnershp between Statistics Canada and the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), to provide a set of statistical measures on education systems in Canada. This fact sheet reports on the proportion of young adults who have left high school without a diploma and, among them, the proportions who have returned to obtain a high -school diploma and who progressed to postsecondary education. It presents data for Canada and the provinces from the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS).

Acquiring Literacy Skills: A Comparison of Provincial and International Results from PISA and IALSS

PISA 2006 - The 2006 Canadian Report

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) was initiated by the member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to provide policy-oriented international indicators of the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students. PISA assesses youth outcomes in three domains, reading, mathematics, and science, focusing on what students can do with what they have learned in school, at home, and in the community. This report provides detailed analysis of the performance of Canadian students in an international context, as well as information on results on a jurisidictional basis, and differences in performance linked to gender, immigrant status, parental education, and socioeconomic status.

Enhancing Learning through Formative Assessment

This Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) study aimed to contribute to an in-depth understanding of how teaching and learning occur and how student progress is assessed as a formative process, using a small number of exemplary innovations. In 2002, CMEC invited the provinces and territories to participate in this review, and five provinces completed the questionnaire. This report provides a review of research on formative evaluation in Canada as well as case studies from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, and Ontario.

SAIP Science III Assessment 2004 - The Public Report

This document forms the report to the public on the results of the pan-Canadian assessment of science achievement for 13-year-old and 16-year-old students, administered in the spring of 2004 by the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), as part of the ongoing School Achievement Indicators Program (SAIP). SAIP is a cyclical program of pan-Canadian assessments of student achievement in science, reading, and mathematics. The report describes the assessment program and provides results on a pan-Canadian and a jurisdictional level. In addition, information is included on the context for learning science in Canada, teachers and teaching, and the school context.

Other sections of the report look at the relationship between student engagement, student learning, and mathematics performance, and the relationship between family characterisitics, home environment, and mathematics performance.

Pan-Canadian results of francophone students in a minority-language setting in the School Achievement Indicators Program (SAIP)

This report presents an in-depth analysis of minority-francophone students' performance on the School Achievement Indicators Program (SAIP) in mathematics, reading and writing, and science assessments, with a view to identifying reasons that might explain their lower performance, as well as to pinpointing avenues of action that might positively influence student performance. Chapters of the report list and review the research on factors relating to academic performance by students in minority-francophone settings, analyse student performance and contextual data gathered in surveys conducted in the first and second assessment cycles of SAIP, identify a range of possible avenues for intervention to improve students' academic performance, and provide possible directions for further research.

Access, Inclusion and Achievement: Closing the Gap Country Response: Canada

The 15th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers was held in 2003. The Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) prepared this document on policies, strategies, practices, critical concerns, and aspirations for education, specifically in relation to the theme "Access, Inclusion and Achievement - Closing the Gap." The report is divided into two sections: Part A consists of best practices, case studies, innovative solutions and policies, and challenges of the educational systems in the provinces and territories, organized around the themes of access, inclusion, and achievement; Part B is linked to the nine points in the Halifax Statement for Education, which resulted from the 14th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers in 2000, and presents progress and success since that meeting in the areas most relevant to Canada's experience, including technologies in education and teacher training.
