5th APEC Education Ministerial Meeting

This report contains the main outcomes of the 5th APEC Education Ministerial Meeting, which took place May 21–23, 2012, in Korea. The meeting focused on topics such as globalization and education, innovation in education, and education cooperation. At the conclusion of the meeting, ministers adopted a joint statement, “Envisioning Together for the Future and Hope,” pledging to continue to foster regional innovative growth, promote future skills suitable for the global society, create innovative instructional delivery systems, and foster more collaborative policy decisions.

Economic Downturn and Educational Attainment

This fact sheet sheds light on the relationship between education and labour market outcomes by providing a brief overview of the impact of economic changes on the employment of individuals with different levels of educational attainment to identify which groups have been most affected by the economic downturn and which have benefitted most from the recovery. The 2008-through-2011 data for Canada and its provinces and territories are from Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey.

Education for Sustainable Development in Canadian Faculties of Education

Teacher Education and Development Study – Mathematics (TEDS-M) 2008

This report presents the Canadian results from the Teacher Education and Development Study – Mathematics (TEDS-M) 2008, an international comparative study on teacher education with a focus on the preparation of teachers of mathematics at the elementary and lower-secondary levels. TEDS-M was carried out under the aegis of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), a consortium of research institutions in 60 countries, including Canada.

Pan-Canadian Report on Official Languages in Education, 2005–06 to 2008–09

The Education World Forum (EWF) 2011 was held under the theme of “Education for Economic Success” and built on previous “Moving Young Minds” and “Learning and Technology World Forum” events. The Canadian delegation was led by the Honourable Patrick Rouble, Minister of Education, Yukon. The report of the forum outlines some lessons learned from around the world on education for economic success and, more specifically, on the application of technological innovations in the education sector and new strategies for higher education. The forum concluded with a commitment to continue support for development and action through the various organizations present.

A Literature Review of Factors that Support Successful Transitions by Aboriginal People from K–12 to Postsecondary Education

A literature review that identifies key research findings relating to the challenges facing Aboriginal people as they make the transition from K-12 to postsecondary education was commissioned by the Canadian Education Statistics Council (CESC). The goal of the project is to understand the challenges Aboriginal people face in the transition from K–12 to postsecondary education through a synthesis of the available provincial/territorial and pan-Canadian literature as well as a scan of data available to support further research.

A Framework for Statistics on Learning and Education in Canada

The Framework provides a multi-dimensional structure for organizing the pan-Canadian information needs on education and learning. It provides the topography for identifying information needs in the learning and education environment in Canada in a way that identifies the relevance of the information to the system as well as the interrelationships among pieces of information. The Framework addresses the scope of Canada Learn 2020, which is based on the vision of quality lifelong learning opportunities for all Canadians.

Interrupting High School and Returning to Education

The Pan-Canadian Education Indicators Program (PCEIP) is an ongoing initiative of the Canadian Education Statistics Council (CESC), a partnershp between Statistics Canada and the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), to provide a set of statistical measures on education systems in Canada. This fact sheet reports on the proportion of young adults who have left high school without a diploma and, among them, the proportions who have returned to obtain a high -school diploma and who progressed to postsecondary education. It presents data for Canada and the provinces from the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS).

Ministerial Statement on Credit Transfer in Canada 2009

In 2002, CMEC approved a strategy to improve credit-transfer systems and promote mobility for students across Canada. Given the differences in credit-transfer systems and Postsecondary structures among provinces and territories, the initial focus was on developing and enhancing the pan-Canadian credit-transfer system. In the summer of 2009, the Ministerial Statement on Credit Transfer in Canada was updated and approved by all ministers.

Factors Affecting the Use of Student Financial Assistance Programs by Aboriginal Youth
