A Literature Review of Factors that Support Successful Transitions by Aboriginal People from K–12 to Postsecondary Education

A literature review that identifies key research findings relating to the challenges facing Aboriginal people as they make the transition from K-12 to postsecondary education was commissioned by the Canadian Education Statistics Council (CESC). The goal of the project is to understand the challenges Aboriginal people face in the transition from K–12 to postsecondary education through a synthesis of the available provincial/territorial and pan-Canadian literature as well as a scan of data available to support further research.

Ministerial Statement on Credit Transfer in Canada 2009

In 2002, CMEC approved a strategy to improve credit-transfer systems and promote mobility for students across Canada. Given the differences in credit-transfer systems and Postsecondary structures among provinces and territories, the initial focus was on developing and enhancing the pan-Canadian credit-transfer system. In the summer of 2009, the Ministerial Statement on Credit Transfer in Canada was updated and approved by all ministers.

In October 2001, the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) revisited the issue of credit transfer between colleges and universities and among provinces and territories. In April 2002, ministers established the CMEC Working Group on Credit Transfer to develop pan-Canadian strategies. Fact Sheet No. 3 - The Council of Europe/UNESCO Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education in the European Region: What it means for Canada

In 1989, Canada ratified the 1979 UNESCO Convention on the Recognition of Studies, Diplomas and Degrees concerning Higher Education in the States belonging to the Europe Region. The purpose of that convention was to facilitate the recognition of foreign degrees and diplomas and to improve access for other countries to information of an official nature about Canadian systems of higher education. A new joint convention was adopted in April 1997 by the countries of the Council of Europe and the UNESCO Europe Region. The new convention, which replaces the 1979 convention, does not differ significantly in substance and objectives. However, it specifies more concretely and in greater detail the responsibilities of ratifying states with respect to the principles and mechanisms for the recognition of qualifications and the collection and dissemination of information on higher education. Canada signed the Council of Europe/UNESCO convention in 1997, committing itself to a wide range of matters regarding the enhancement of academic and professional mobility and to the promotion of fair practice in assessment and recognition of qualifications. This fact sheet provides details on conventions, as well as the main features of this convention, Canada's obligations, and the implications of the convention for postsecondary institutions in Canada.
