Actions and Events

Awareness of and involvement in literacy activities are promoted through events and activities — regional, pan-Canadian, and international — in which CMEC and the provinces and territories participate.

  • International Adult Learners’ Week (IALW): Celebrated in Canada since 2002, IALW will be held from March 1 to 7 in 2010.
  • CONFINTEA VI: The Sixth International Conference on Adult Education brought together participants from around the world and resulted in the Bélem Framework for Action.
  • United Nations Literacy Decade: From 2003 to 2012, UNESCO is coordinating the UN Literacy Decade. CMEC has submitted a report detailing literacy activities across Canada from 2004 to 2006.
  • Family Literacy Day: On January 27 of each year, Family Literacy Day is celebrated across the country. With the 2010 theme of “Sing for Literacy,” music and song are central to the events in hundreds of communities.
