To highlight the commitment of ministers of education to literacy, as well as CMEC activities and provincial/territorial initiatives, a Progress Report on Literacy 2009 has been released. Progress reports will be issued on an annual basis to communicate how provincial and territorial governments have worked together to improve the literacy levels of Canadians.

CMEC's Progress Report on Literacy 2009 contains:

  • Commitment on Literacy — Ministers of education have articulated a commitment on literacy that outlines their belief in the critical importance of literacy, their focus on literacy, and their resolution for continued action in literacy.

  • CMEC Literacy Action Plan — The action plan engages provincial and territorial ministers responsible for education, in their own jurisdictions and collectively through CMEC, to raise the literacy levels of Canadians. Through the action plan, ministers committed to work together in the areas of policy, practice, research and assessment, communications, and engagement.

  • Literacy Initiatives 2008-2009 — This Web showcase outlines over 100 provincial and territorial initiatives that aim to improve the literacy levels of Canadians, from early childhood to adulthood. The Progress Report on Literacy 2009 includes selected highlights from this compilation.
