In 2007, the Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials (CICIC), a unit of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), began work on a multi-year project to improve the consistency and portability of academic assessments conducted in Canada. The project is funded by the Foreign Credential Recognition Program at Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC).

Project goals:

  • To help internationally trained newcomers integrate into the workforce by improving the consistency and portability of their academic and professional assessments across Canada, in both regulated and unregulated professions;

  • To facilitate the assessment of academic credentials for the admission of foreign students to Canadian colleges and universities.

Phase I, which was a diagnostic of the state of academic credential assessment in Canada, was completed in 2008. Phase II, which focused on the develop of Web-based resources and tools related to academic credential assessment, was completed in early 2012.

CMEC is currently working with HRSDC on funding options for Phase III.
